In 2003, UNESCO inscribed Phong Nha - Ke Bang National Park on the World Heritage List as a World Natural Heritage site under geological and geomorphological criteria. In 2015, the World Heritage Committee approved an extension of the property, recognizing it for the second time under biodiversity and ecosystem criteria. In 2025, the site achieved transboundary status with the inclusion of Hin Nam No National Park (Laos), officially becoming the Phong Nha - Ke Bang National Park and Hin Nam No National Park transboundary World Heritage site. In 2026, Phong Nha - Ke Bang was officially designated as a World Biosphere Reserve under UNESCO's Man and the Biosphere (MAB) Programme.
