The forerunner of Phong Nha - Ke Bang National Park was the Phong Nha Natural Reserve formed in 1992. The Phong Nha Natural Reserve was one largest special use forest with an area of 41,123 ha. Then Phong Nha - Kẻ Bàng National Park was established under the Decision No 189/2001/QD-TTg dated December 12, 2001 by the Prime Minister. The Phong Nha Ke Bang National Park has a system of natural and uniquely interesting water grottoes and is covered with thick jungle, as well as abundant wildlife and plants. The Park is also recognized by UNESSCO as a World Natural Heritage Site. For recent years, Phong Nha –Ke Bang National Park has closely cooperated with scientists and national and international organizations such as Cologne Zoo, British Cave Association, Ha Noi National University, Ecological and Biological Resource Institute and Center for Northern Truong Son Biodiversity… to conduct basic researches on biodiversity and geomorphology. Phong Nha - Ke Bang has been discovered a site as an ecological zone with high biodiversity. The results of ten years research show that 1 plant, 1 bird, 6 retile, 1 amphibian, 12 fish and 2 butterfly species described as new species to science.
